The United Nations confirms that millions of Somalis are in need of assistance this year
The United Nations said: Somalia will face a difficult time in 2024, as millions will need humanitarian assistance, just like in recent years. The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in a statement issued that an estimated 6.9 million people in the country will need assistance. As the country recovers from the worst and longest drought in four decades, which has killed up to 43,000 people and displaced more than 1.5 million, rainfall exacerbated by the El NiƱo climate phenomenon has exacerbated the situation.
In 2023, an estimated 8.25 million people, nearly half of Somalia's population, required humanitarian assistance and life-saving protection. The Somali government declared a state of emergency in October last year after severe weather conditions destroyed homes, roads and bridges
