Somalia suffers from a severe prison shortage

Colonel Hassan Ali Nur “Shoti”, President of the Military Court of First Instance, noted that Somalia suffers from a severe shortage of prisons, and highlighted this problem. Shuti explained that Mogadishu Central Prison had become a facility housing all individuals involved in various criminal activities, who should have been distributed to different prisons based on the nature of their crimes.

He added that the central prison was scheduled to accommodate 800 people, but it now contains 1,600 individuals, noting that this overcrowding exacerbated the challenges faced by the authorities in maintaining order inside the prison. Furthermore, Schuti drew attention to the fact that moral and disciplinary offenses are often dealt with outside the prison setting due to these challenges.

The President of the Court of First Instance stressed the urgent need to find solutions to this problem to prevent further challenges in the country's judicial system, and called for immediate attention to this urgent issue to ensure the effective administration of justice and the security of the nation.
