Somalia clarifies WFP warehouse concerns, affirming aid remains under UN control as port expansion continues in coordination with donors.
The Federal Government of Somalia has addressed recent statements issued by the United States Department of State concerning allegations linked to a World Food Programme (WFP) warehouse in Mogadishu, reaffirming its commitment to transparency, humanitarian principles, and continued cooperation with international partners.
In an official clarification, the Government emphasized that all humanitarian commodities referenced in the reports remain fully under the custody, management, and operational control of the World Food Programme, including assistance provided by the United States and other donor partners. The Government stressed that there has been no diversion, misuse, or disruption of humanitarian aid.
Authorities further explained that the warehouse in question is situated within the Mogadishu Port area, which is currently undergoing expansion and infrastructure development as part of a long-term strategy to modernize port facilities and improve trade and logistics capacity. These development activities, the Government noted, are being conducted in a manner that safeguards humanitarian operations and ensures uninterrupted aid delivery to vulnerable populations.
To address concerns raised regarding the port expansion, the Federal Government has established a technical inter-agency committee working in close coordination with humanitarian partners to review the situation, assess operational impacts, and ensure compliance with agreed protocols.
The Federal Government of Somalia reiterated its strong partnership with the United States, the World Food Programme, and the broader international donor community, underscoring that accountability and cooperation remain central to its engagement with humanitarian stakeholders. The Government confirmed that further updates will be shared upon the completion of the technical review process.
