Warnings of heavy rain in the area

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Climate Prediction and Applications Center has released its latest weather forecast. The center expects that the long rainy season, from March to May, will receive above-average rainfall, which is considered good news for the region, as this season contributes up to 60 percent of the annual rainfall.

According to experts, the expected probability is between 55 and 65 percent and it will benefit countries such as Kenya, Somalia, southern Ethiopia, South Sudan, Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda and northwestern Tanzania. “The expected above-average rainfall represents a significant shift from recent droughts that caused enormous hardship,” said Dr. Guled Artan, Director of ICPAC.

The agency predicts warmer than normal temperatures across the region. Sudan, northern South Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Somalia and southern parts of Tanzania are likely to see higher than normal temperatures. Rising temperatures can affect agriculture, water availability and public health, among other things.
