Somalia and the United States sign a memorandum of understanding to build five military bases for the Somali army

On Thursday, Somalia and the United States of America signed a memorandum of understanding regarding the construction of five military bases for the “Danb” Brigade of the Somali National Army.

The agreement aims for Washington's contribution to building an effective Somali army capable of assuming security responsibilities and fighting against Al-Shabaab. Molly Fee, US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs who was present at the signing ceremony, said that the United States supports Somalia so that its army can confront Al-Shabaab.

The American official indicated that relying on temporary camps hinders the readiness of DENAB, explaining that the goal is for the Somali army to maintain full control over operations when the facilities are completed, and she stated that the memorandum of understanding provides the detailed plan for doing so.

Speaking at the ceremony, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud thanked the US government for its support and said: “Investments in the SNA/DNB have paid off, fueling a formidable strike force leading Somali security forces’ attacks against Al-Shabaab.”

The signing of the memorandum of understanding comes as tensions rise in the Horn of Africa over the January 1 agreement between Somaliland and Ethiopia that gives Addis Ababa access to the sea in exchange for possible recognition of the breakaway Somaliland.

The Somali federal government strongly criticized the deal, saying it was a violation of Somalia's sovereignty and territorial integrity and considered the memorandum of understanding concluded between Hargeisa and Addis Ababa invalid.
