Apple plans significant artificial intelligence updates to its Siri assistant.
Bloomberg News reported on Thursday that Apple plans to open its Siri voice assistant to competing artificial intelligence services, going beyond its current partnership with ChatGPT. This move marks a significant shift in Apple's AI strategy as the company seeks to catch up with its Silicon Valley peers and position the iPhone as a broader AI platform. The report, citing sources familiar with the matter, stated that the move, expected as part of Apple's iOS 27 update, will allow third-party AI applications to integrate directly with Siri. This would enable users to direct queries to services like Alphabet's Gemini or Anthropic's Cloud from within the assistant.
Siri, the assistant first launched over a decade ago, is considered a key element in Apple's efforts. Bloomberg News reported that Apple is developing tools that will allow chatbot apps installed through its App Store to work with Siri and other features within the Apple Intelligence platform.
Users will be able to choose which AI service handles each request. The report also stated that this update could help Apple generate more revenue by taking a share of subscriptions sold through third-party AI services. Apple is expected to showcase the new software features at its Worldwide Developers Conference in June.
