Napoli punish Lukaku for his rebellion
Italian football club Napoli has fined its player Romelu Lukaku €150,000, equivalent to 20% of his total monthly salary, making the Belgian striker's departure from the club this summer inevitable, according to the Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport. Lukaku returned to Napoli from Belgium after an absence of more than two weeks and met with club director Giovanni Manna on Monday, the newspaper reported.The club allowed Lukaku to return to Antwerp, Belgium, but retained 20% of his total monthly salary due to the striker's two-week absence without their permission. Numerous Italian media reports indicate that Lukaku's departure from Napoli this summer seems inevitable.
Lukaku's agent, Federico Pastorello, participated in Monday's meeting, where he will be tasked with finding a new club for his client, who has one year remaining on his contract with his current club. Lukaku, 32, suffered a serious muscle injury at the start of the current season, forcing him to miss the first half of the campaign.
Lukaku has scored just one goal in seven appearances this season and has yet to start a match. According to multiple sources, Lukaku did not meet with manager Antonio Conte on Monday, but the veteran striker hopes to be fit for the final three Serie A games of the season and will spend the next two weeks in Belgium regaining full fitness.
