Conte is close to returning to coach Italy

Reports emerged on Sunday indicating that Antonio Conte is the leading candidate to return as Italy's national football team coach, succeeding Gennaro Gattuso. The 56-year-old has reportedly expressed strong enthusiasm for taking on the role for a second time in his career, despite his current contract with Napoli running until June 2027.

The reports suggest that club president Aurelio De Laurentiis would not object to Conte's departure next summer to coach Italy, particularly if Giovanni Malagò is elected as the new president of the Italian Football Federation on June 22, according to Sunday's edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Conte previously managed the Italian national team between 2014 and 2016, leading them to the quarterfinals of the European Championship before being eliminated on penalties by Germany. He enjoys considerable support within the Italian Football Federation. Silvio Baldini is expected to be appointed as interim coach to lead Italy in friendly matches during June, with the permanent coach to be announced at the end of June or the beginning of July.
