Manchester United announced on Monday the departure of their Portuguese coach, Ruben Amorim, following a series of negative results.
A statement from the club read: "Ruben Amorim has resigned from his position as head coach of Manchester United," adding, " Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to the Europa League final in Bilbao in May."
He explained: "With Manchester United in sixth place in the Premier League, the club's management made the difficult decision that it was time for a change."
He continued: "The club thanks Robin for his contribution to the club and wishes him the best of luck in his future career."
The statement indicated that Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday.Manchester United continued to drop points in the English Premier League, following their 1-1 draw with hosts Leeds United on Sunday, in the 20th round of the competition.
During the press conference that followed the meeting, Amorim expressed his dissatisfaction with the club's management, according to the British news agency PA Media.
Amorim had hinted at behind-the-scenes anger before the game, with the United manager refusing to clarify his recent comments about the club's transfer market plans.
The 40-year-old manager appeared frustrated as he dodged those questions, but he was more candid when asked after the Leeds match whether he still felt the board's confidence. Amorim said: "Guys, first of all, I've noticed you're getting selective information about everything. I came here to be Manchester United's technical director, not its manager. That's clear."
The United manager added: "I know my name is not (Thomas) Tuchel, nor (Antonio) Conte, nor (Jose) Mourinho, but I am the manager of Manchester United, and it will remain that way for 18 months or until the board decides to change. That was my point of view."
Manchester United , who have only managed two wins in their last seven matches in the competition, now have 31 points and sit in sixth place in the prestigious league standings.
Amorim has suffered more failures than successes since taking over as Manchester United's manager in late 2024.
