The Minister of Information congratulates Somali journalists on World Press Freedom Day.
The Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism, His Excellency Daoud Awais Jama, congratulated Somali journalists and the media community in general on Sunday, May 3rd, on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day. His Excellency Jama noted that this day represents an opportunity to celebrate the important role journalists play in community development, protecting democracy, and ensuring transparency.The Minister of Information said, “On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to journalists for their vital role in public life and in upholding truth, transparency, and democracy. I recognize that your role in raising public awareness is clear and essential.”
The Minister explained that this year’s occasion coincides with direct elections in the country, which necessitates supportive media coverage to ensure peaceful elections that strengthen social cohesion. He also urged Somali journalists to play a significant role in raising public awareness against extremist ideologies, promoting peacebuilding, and enhancing public understanding.
The Minister of Information noted that the Federal Government is committed to promoting responsible press freedom, improving the quality of media outlets, and training journalists. “We believe that well-trained and informed journalists are essential for good governance and sustainable development in our country,” he stated.
The Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism reaffirms to Somali journalists its commitment to protecting press freedom, the safety of journalists, and their right to access information. The Federal Government will continue its efforts to strengthen the media by encouraging the implementation of sound journalistic principles and ethics.
