China tightens controls as more coronavirus cases are reported

China

Hong Kong recorded 27,647 new cases of corona, Shanghai closed schools and parks, and Beijing authorities suspended access to a residential area and told citizens not to leave the capital, after discovering new infections.

And Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam has warned that the wave of infections in the territory may not have reached its peak despite strict restrictions on travel and business.

"At this moment, we cannot comfortably say that we are past the peak and would prefer to take a very cautious attitude," Lam told a news conference.

On the mainland, the Chinese government reported 588 new confirmed cases, and there were no deaths within 24 hours as of Friday midnight.

And the city government of Shanghai, where 22 new cases were recorded today, Saturday, announced that schools will return to teaching online.

Public attractions, including the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, have begun requiring visitors to show negative results for coronavirus tests, according to news reports.

In Beijing, where five new cases were recorded, part of the Yosemite apartment complex in the northeastern district of Shunyi was closed, after an infection was discovered there and the authorities ordered residents to undergo testing.

The government said the infected person was found in contact with a previous case in the capital.

"Please do not leave Beijing unless necessary," state television quoted the capital's Communist Party Committee spokesman Xu Hejian as saying.
