 The Assistant Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ambassador Hossam Zaki, announced that a high-level international Arab conference on confronting drought, enhancing food security and raising the ability to adapt to climate change will be organized in Somalia on December 6, under the auspices of the Arab League and the United Nations, in order to coordinate the efforts of Arab organizations. And the UN to face the threat of famine in Somalia after the number of people affected by the drought reached about 7.8 million people.


Ambassador Zaki said - during a press conference held at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the Arab League on Wednesday 11-23-2022 - that Somalia is facing a severe drought crisis, which is the worst that has hit the country in several decades, as there has been a scarcity of rain for 5 years, which has led to the survival of half of the Somali people. In a drought crisis, which is one of the manifestations of climate change, stressing that the Arab League will not stand idly by in front of this situation.


He pointed out that the Secretary-General of the League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, had contacted the Somali President, the Somali Foreign Minister, and many Somali officials, as they had demands that we stand by them in this disaster, which has no immediate way out in light of the current circumstances.


Ambassador Zaki noted that Aboul Gheit addressed letters to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the Director of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations “FAO” and the Executive Director of the World Food Program, where he suggested that the university host this international Arab conference to coordinate action plans between local, regional and international organizations working in Somalia to confront the situation There, to prevent duplication of humanitarian work and to raise Arab and international awareness of this crisis.
