The UAE

The Global Skills Report 2023, issued by Coursera, one of the largest online education platforms in the world, showed that the UAE is a regional and global leader in acquiring digital skills. According to the report, the country ranked first in the Middle East and North Africa region in terms of total skill proficiency, and also ranked second in the world in business skills.

The findings of the Global Skills Report 2023 are based on data from 124 million learners in more than 100 countries who have used Coursera to acquire a new skill over the past year.

The report assesses three of the most indispensable skills for jobs in the era of the digital economy: business skills, technology and data science. The report establishes specific classifications for countries based on the percentages of skills prevalence among their human cadres, with 76% and more representing the “leading” skills category, and 51% to 75% representing the “competitive” category. 25% to 50% for the "startups" category; And 25% or less for the "late" category.

Ranked first globally

According to the report, learners in the UAE scored a high rate of proficiency in business skills (99%), with a great tendency to master communication skills (ranked first in the world), leadership and management skills, and human resource skills (ranked second in the world in both). With a high score for mastering leadership-related skills, these skills continue to attract the interest of learners in the UAE.

Compared with learners in other countries, learners in the UAE are more likely to invest in leadership skills such as people development, negotiation and conflict resolution skills, and managerial development. Focusing on human and leadership skills can be critical to overcoming the disruption caused by the rapid adoption of AI technologies.

The report referred to data science as a vital field for growth and enhancing the skills of learners in the UAE with a rate of (24%), despite the fact that they recorded the highest rate of data visualization skills with a rate of (64%). Therefore, it is necessary to continue investing and developing skills in this field to take advantage of the available opportunities by spreading advanced technologies in various sectors.

The Global Skills Report 2023 indicated that the true strength of learners in the UAE lies in mastering business skills. With the exception of accounting (35%), learners show very high proficiency in almost all areas of these skills. The country's strong growth trajectory in technology is evident in the high scores attained by learners in skills such as security engineering (90%), software engineering (88%) and computer networking (97%).
