 Frenchman Kylian Mbappé continued to miss Real Madrid's training session two days before their Champions League round of 16 first leg against Manchester City, while defender Álvaro Carreras will also miss the match due to injury.

Mbappé is unlikely to be fit for Wednesday's highly anticipated match at the Santiago Bernabéu against Pep Guardiola's side, due to a knee problem that has plagued him since December. As for Carreras, he is suffering from a muscle injury in his right calf, Real Madrid said in a statement on Monday, without specifying the duration of his absence.

The record holders for the most continental titles (15) are suffering from a spate of injuries, as they will also be without England's Jude Bellingham, Brazil's Eder Militao and Rodrygo, Austria's David Alaba, and Spain's Dani Ceballos against City.

However, the absence of Mbappe could be the biggest blow to coach Alvaro Arbeloa's team, given the lack of a set timeframe for his return. Spanish media outlets have suggested he could feature in the second leg next week. Mbappe has missed the last three matches for the Parisian club and recently traveled to Paris for tests and treatment, with surgery ruled out.
