Al-Jaber participates in the meeting of the Ministers of Energy and Environment of the European Union

 The UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, President-designate of the COP28 Conference of the Parties, Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, affirmed that the UAE has established its leading position in the world thanks to the vision and directives of the leadership, by building bridges of partnership and cooperation with the international community, especially in the field of sustainable economic and social development and climate action.

This came during his participation in a meeting of energy and environment ministers of the European Union countries hosted by Spain, which currently holds the presidency of the Council, during which he discussed the plans and objectives of the COP28 Conference of the Parties, which will be held at the end of this year, as these meetings aim to strengthen existing cooperation with the European Union, and build the necessary momentum to achieve progress. On the subject of climate finance, the production capacity of renewable energy globally increased 3 times.

On this occasion, Al-Jaber said that his goal as President-designate of COP28 focuses on mobilizing global efforts to address the repercussions of climate change, ensure food security, health and sanitation for all, achieve a logical, gradual, practical and just transition in the energy sector, and provide climate financing in an accessible and affordable manner for all, especially countries of the Global South.

During the meeting, which was attended by the Director-General, Special Representative of the COP28 Presidency, Ambassador Majid Al-Suwaidi and a number of senior officials, Al-Jaber stressed the importance of preparing an effective response to the results of the global outcome to assess progress made in implementing the goals of the Paris Agreement, and the need for a radical correction of the course of action to reduce emissions. global growth by 43 percent by 2030, and accelerate the achievement of a logical, practical and just transition in the energy sector.

Among the attendees of the meeting with the European Ministers of Energy and Environment were the Spanish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Environmental Transition, Teresa Ribera, and the Executive Vice President of the European Commission, its Commissioner for Climate Protection, Frans Timmermans.

The COP28 team discussed with European ministers and officials a range of important topics, including the global outcome of assessing progress in implementing the goals of the Paris Agreement, climate finance, the development of international financing institutions, and increasing the production of renewable energy sources and hydrogen.

Al-Jaber stressed the importance of the COP28 Conference as the last opportunity for the world to maintain the possibility of achieving the goal of avoiding a rise in global temperature exceeding the level of 1.5 degrees Celsius, and said that the world has only 7 years to reduce global emissions by 43 percent to preserve the possibility of achieving this goal.

He also made it clear that the world will witness at the same time a significant increase in energy demand with an increase in its population, and stressed the urgent need to achieve effective and sustainable development in conjunction with a significant reduction in emissions, which is one of the critical challenges for our current era, and requires a radical change and a shift.
