His Excellency Sheikh Shakhbout bin Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of State, chaired today's meeting of the Security Council on the situation in Somalia, where he called on the international community to raise the level of response to the humanitarian situation and climate change in Somalia.

The meeting was held during the UAE presidency of the UN Security Council for the month of June, in the presence of His Excellency Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud, President of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

He urged His Excellency to extend a helping hand to address the conditions suffered by the brotherly Somali people affected by the drought, which is causing the displacement of families in search of a safe haven, saying: "Addressing the humanitarian and climate crisis requires coordination and expansion of aid." His Excellency also highlighted the UAE's commitment to support Somalia in these areas, by providing aid amounting to $194.6 million between 2018 and 2023.

In a related context, His Excellency stressed that terrorist acts, especially those attacks launched by Al-Shabaab, represent the most difficult challenge to achieving the political, social and economic aspirations of Somalia, and said in this regard: "During the first quarter of this year, the number of terrorism-related incidents exceeded the rate of Previous and recorded accidents since 2016. His Excellency added, "The UAE is deeply concerned about the escalation of attacks by Al-Shabaab against civilians and security forces, including those targeting personnel and facilities of the African Union Transitional Mission in Somalia."

His Excellency highlighted the UAE's commitment to supporting Somalia's national vision, stressing the importance of focusing on reconciliation, reforming the electoral system, and strengthening cooperation between the Somali government and federal states through the National Consultative Council. His Excellency also praised the government's efforts to reach agreements and settlements through dialogue and negotiations, as part of its efforts to build a country that meets the aspirations of its people.

During his visit to New York, His Excellency Sheikh Shakhbout bin Nahyan held bilateral meetings with senior officials of the United Nations and members of the diplomats, reinforcing the UAE's commitment to cooperation and partnership at the international level. On the sidelines of his chairmanship of the Security Council meeting on Somalia, His Excellency met with His Excellency Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud, President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Cindy McCain, Executive Director of the World Food Program, and HE Ambassador Ammar Ben Jomaa, Permanent Representative of Algeria to the United Nations.
