Ruto announces summit of leaders of Somalia, Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya to discuss regional tensions
Kenyan President William Ruto announced today that a summit will soon be held between the leaders of Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda, with the aim of addressing the escalating tensions in the Horn of Africa region, which is witnessing ongoing security challenges and unrest.This came during the 24th East African Community Heads of State Summit in Arusha, Tanzania, where Ruto chaired the regional bloc. The Kenyan president stressed that this summit will contribute to enhancing stability in the region, without specifying a specific date for the meeting.
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has repeatedly refused to hold direct talks with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed unless a controversial memorandum of understanding signed by Ethiopia and Somaliland on January 1, 2024, is scrapped.
