Somali Cabinet Approves Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission

The Somali Cabinet, in an emergency meeting held last night and chaired by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, approved the members of the Independent National Electoral and Boundaries Commission.

The 18-member commission is responsible for managing national elections at the federal and regional levels, and the meeting noted that the Somali government is committed to restoring the right of the Somali people to elect their leaders.

The Cabinet’s approval of the formation of the Independent National Electoral and Boundaries Commission comes within the framework of intensive efforts made by the Somali government to conduct “one person, one vote” elections, by passing the necessary laws to conduct those elections, in the Somali parliament.

The Somali government has also begun to mobilize popular support for a general election in the country, with demonstrations organized by the capital Mogadishu on Tuesday, attended by hundreds of people from different walks of life.

Officials addressing the demonstrators gathered at the Unknown Soldier Square stressed their commitment to enabling citizens to exercise their constitutional rights to choose their leaders and to make democracy more inclusive and representative in Somalia.
