Ahmed Madobe re-elected for third term

Members of the Jubaland State Parliament in southern Somalia on Monday re-elected Ahmed Mohamed Islam “Madobe” as the state’s president for a third term despite the Somali government’s opposition to the elections held in Jubaland.

Madobe won 55 votes, compared to 16 for his closest rival, Faisal Mohamed Matan, while the other candidate, Abukar Abdi Hassan, won only 4 votes. Ahmed Madobe walked out of the National Consultative Council meetings last October, rejecting the results of which called for unified elections for the Somali regional states

The Jubaland regional government has now begun holding state elections, which ended today with the re-election of President Madobe, who has ruled the region since 2013.
