NASA and Google are testing an AI-powered medical assistant to accompany and assist astronauts in diagnosing and treating medical issues they face while in space.
Space.com reported that NASA and Google are collaborating to test an AI-powered digital medical assistant designed to support astronauts during long-duration missions to the Moon and Mars.
During missions to the Moon or Mars, it is difficult for astronauts to obtain immediate medical advice from Earth, and returning to Earth is not an option.
As part of its Artemis program, NASA is working with Google to test a prototype known as the Crew Medical Digital Assistant (CMODI), an intelligent system that will assist doctors and users in making medical decisions.
This assistant analyzes symptoms, previous diagnoses, and results to suggest treatment or diagnostic options.
This digital assistant will provide medical support to astronauts operating outside low-Earth orbit, such as on missions to the Moon and Mars. This will allow the crew to independently diagnose and treat symptoms without having to communicate with doctors on Earth.
Space noted that this technology will benefit doctors in remote and challenging environments on Earth, especially in areas that are difficult for specialists and physicians to access.
