The Ministry of Interior in Egypt continues to combat crime, using modern artificial intelligence technologies, which have become a key element of security technology, and are being exploited on a number of key axes, which demonstrate their importance and support efforts to apprehend outlaws.
There are many areas in which artificial intelligence is a key element in detecting, confronting, and even preventing crime before it occurs, through the technical and technological centers established by the Ministry, represented by the “Security Operations Center”, which includes highly trained experts.
The areas in which artificial intelligence is used to control and restore security in Egypt include combating terrorism, controlling traffic crimes, analyzing individual behavior, in addition to analyzing data and identifying the fingerprints of individuals’ crimes, as well as reviewing cameras and identifying faces with high accuracy.
An important tool for crime detection
Security expert Brigadier General Sameh Ezz Al-Arab said that artificial intelligence is one of the most important tools currently used by the Ministry of Interior to detect crimes, and some of its technologies and programs can predict crime by analyzing data and identifying places suitable for the occurrence of serial or repeated crimes.
He explained, in exclusive statements to Sky News Arabia, that the security services have been able to make significant use of artificial intelligence technologies over the past two years, by expanding the use of its systems and integrating them into the public security system, to analyze huge amounts of data in record time.
According to the Egyptian security expert, the ministry uses artificial intelligence to link information from a number of different cases, leading the devices to trace leads of crime elements that human intelligence cannot easily achieve or access.
He added: “Artificial intelligence programs can identify crime patterns and link their methods to the perpetrators who usually commit this type of crime, which makes it easier for security agencies to predict the locations of the next crime, and perhaps also to determine its timing, and thus thwart it before it occurs.”
Az Al-Arab stressed that artificial intelligence has become an indispensable tool for pursuing various crimes, but there are 5 main areas that are being worked on to confront them, which are: terrorism crimes , cybercrimes, serial murder crimes, fraud operations, and crimes of promoting drugs and morals.
Relying on artificial intelligence to solve crimes
For his part, a source in the new “Security Operations Center” of the Egyptian Ministry of Interior said that there are a number of crimes that the center was able to solve very quickly, relying on artificial intelligence technologies and programs, most notably digital attacks and hacking attempts, in addition to electronic theft operations using smart algorithms.
In an exclusive interview with Sky News Arabia, he pointed out that smart programs also help in facial recognition and image analysis, which is an important step in combating terrorism and murder, as they can accurately track suspects, even if they disguise themselves or change their features to escape accountability or arrest.
According to the security source, these technologies contribute to examining and analyzing surveillance camera recordings very quickly, which shortens the time required to pursue criminals. In addition, these technologies can be programmed to give immediate alerts as soon as certain incidents occur, or unusual activities are detected in certain places.
He continued: “Therefore, artificial intelligence, with its various programs, helps to increase crime detection rates and to solve many mysteries that were a problem in the past, such as crimes of theft, murder, harassment, cyber theft, as well as cyber fraud, defamation and extortion.”
He added that this software supports the control of other crimes such as the promotion of narcotics and immoral acts, and most importantly, its role in controlling attempts to recruit young people to commit crimes for the benefit of the "dark web," which are new crimes to Egyptian society but are very influential in terms of their seriousness.
He said that the most famous operations recently were the operations to arrest a criminal network that specialized in selling the famous drug “hydro”, as the dealers of this drug were able to escape from the security services for a long time and hide, before the Ministry of Interior used artificial intelligence technologies to reach them and arrest them, especially since the accused in turn used smart technologies to hide and escape always.
