Somalia has postponed the completion of the House of Representatives elections to the 15th of March, further delaying the electoral process, which has been repeatedly delayed.
The House of Representatives elections were scheduled to be completed today, Friday, according to a new agreement, and pave the way for naming the president, but Deputy Information Minister Abdel Rahman Youssef said that “the deadline is set for March 15.”
"The National Consultative Council expressed its disappointment at not being able to meet the deadline," he added in a televised speech.
This comes days after the International Monetary Fund announced in an interview with Agence France-Presse that “further delays may lead to the complete suspension of its programs,” and that the International Monetary Fund should finish evaluating its programs in mid-May, including many key points related to future reforms that It must be approved by the new government.
This poor country was more than a year late in conducting the electoral process against the backdrop of tension between President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, known as Farmajo, and his Prime Minister, Mohamed Hussein Roble.
Farmajo, who has held the presidency since 2017, ended on February 8, 2021 without reaching an agreement with regional leaders on the elections to be held in Somalia according to a complex and indirect system.
The announcement in mid-April of extending his mandate for two years sparked armed clashes in Mogadishu.
