Two Chinese astronauts carried out a spacewalk, Saturday, from a new space station scheduled to be completed later in 2022. Chinese state media said astronauts Cai Xuezhe and Chen Dong installed pumps and a handle to open the porthole door in case of emergency, among others. of equipment outside the station.

China is building its own space station after the United States excluded it from the International Space Station because its military runs its own space program. The spacewalk is the second in a six-month mission that will oversee the completion of the space station.

The first of two laboratories, weighing 23 tons, was added to the station in July, and the other will be dispatched later this year. Astronaut Liu Yang, the third member of the Chinese team, supported her colleagues from inside the station during their spacewalk.

Liu and Chen conducted their first spacewalk about two weeks ago. They are due to be joined by three other astronauts towards the end of their mission, in what will be the first time that six people have been aboard the station, according to the Associated Press.
