Climate Needs an Ally Like Sultan Al Jaber

 In view of the negative effects that the world suffers from due to climate change, the selection of Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al-Jaber, as appointed president of the COP28 Conference, was a historic step at a very important stage.

Under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, on January 12, His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Presidential Court, issued a decision to assign Dr. United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28).

The choice won many regional and international praises, at a time when the UAE is committed to the goal of the Paris Agreement to limit the global temperature rise to below 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Amidst the positive reactions to Dr. Sultan Al-Jaber's selection for this position, and his pioneering role in climate action, and support for efforts to transition to clean energy, an international certificate came from the "Bloomberg" economic agency, which is one of the most prominent international voices that are characterized by impartiality and sobriety in their reports.

In an article published today, Friday, the US agency said that Dr. Sultan Al-Jaber, the designated president of the COP28 Conference, is "the ally that the climate movement needs."

The IAEA's praise did not come out of nowhere, as Dr. Sultan Al-Jaber has credit and history that makes him able to meet the requirements of the position, especially in this critical period of climate.

Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber was appointed twice as the UAE's Special Envoy for Climate Change (from 2010 to 2016 and from 2020 to date), and he participated in more than 10 previous climate conferences, including the historic COP21 conference held in Paris in 2015, which are experiences A task that makes him able to read the scene more generally, and provide an important insight into the climate and its issues.

Dr. Sultan Al Jaber also has long experience in the field of management and economics and in the renewable energy sector, where he played a pivotal role in the development and expansion of the portfolio of renewable energy assets in the UAE, both internally and externally.

All these factors enable him to play an important role in leading the intergovernmental process of converging views and converging opinions to reach a global consensus to raise the ceiling of climate ambition, in cooperation with a wide and diverse group of partners and stakeholders, including the business sector and civil society.

The Bloomberg Agency's praise did not stop there, but rather went beyond it to say that most world leaders supported the appointment of Dr. Sultan Al-Jaber as appointed president of the COP28 Conference, including President Joe Biden's special envoy for climate, John Kerry.
