The Speaker of the Somali People's Assembly, Sheikh Adam Madobe, announced the cancellation of opposition MP Dr. Abdullahi Hashi Aviv's membership in the Council, due to his absence from two consecutive sessions, according to a statement issued by Madobe.

The decision, announced on Saturday, sparked intense controversy, as it was described as politically motivated and unconstitutional, with many MPs suggesting that the aim of the move was to silence opposition voices rather than maintain parliamentary discipline.

Representative Aviv, who hails from Somaliland, previously stated that his absence from parliamentary sessions was due to security concerns, constantly stressing that he is ready to participate in parliamentary procedures but requires guarantees for his personal safety.

The MP had previously accused the Somali federal government of corruption in projects funded by donors, which raised tensions between him and the Somali government. MPs considered dropping his membership as an undermining of democracy and a violation of constitutional procedures.
