Hargeisa - Somaliland's Immigration and Border Protection Authority has announced new regulations for travelers arriving at its airports, following Somaliland's rejection of the Somali government's e-visa system.
A press release from the authority clarified the new requirements for those wishing to obtain visas directly from Somaliland airports. These requirements include: possession of a passport valid for at least six months and a return ticket, proof of sufficient funds for the duration of the stay in Somaliland, providing the applicant's residential address or the name of their sponsor, and payment of the visa fee at the airport, if not in transit.
The Immigration Authority added in its statement that these requirements will not apply to Somaliland citizens holding foreign passports, such as expatriates. The statement also indicated that travelers arriving via sea and land borders will be required to obtain visas from Somaliland representative offices abroad, adding that applications can be submitted to the Immigration Authority.
Somaliland has rejected the new visa regime imposed by the Federal Government of Somalia on all travelers to Somalia, including Somaliland, and ordered them to apply for visas online through the Somali Immigration Service website.
The new system poses a challenge to the existing system in Somaliland, where visas are issued at its airports. This system has also been rejected by Puntland. However, the Somali government believes that this new system expands its administrative powers and gives it full control over the management of Somali airspace, including Somaliland
