The European Union disburses 9 million euros in budget support for Somalia

The European Union has disbursed €9 million in budget support to the Federal Government of Somalia, in recognition of its achievements in maintaining macroeconomic stability and implementing critical reforms in public finance management.

This push is part of the EU Decade on State-building and Resilience in Somalia and aims to strengthen the capacity of the Somali government to mobilize domestic revenues, strengthen fiscal federalism, and expand public education services through initiatives such as the National Teacher Initiative.

The European Union Ambassador to Somalia, Ms. Karen Johansson, confirmed that the disbursement reflects the European Union's commitment to supporting Somalia's efforts in financial accountability and transparency. “It signals the EU’s strong support for the progress made by Somalia in managing its public finances and highlights the EU’s dedication to the joint EU-Somalia operational roadmap,” she said.

Somali Minister of Finance, His Excellency Bihi Iman Agha, welcomed the EU’s support for the budget, noting that it provides essential funding to drive key financial reforms and improve the delivery of basic social services across the country.

Since 2018, the EU has provided a total of €101.4 million in budget support to Somalia through regional central banks. This support played a critical role in helping Somalia reach the HIPC completion point and strengthening core state functions.
