Argentine superstar Lionel Messi has finally agreed to a new contract with Inter Miami, ending a long period of uncertainty regarding his future and ensuring his continued presence with the Major League Soccer team as it prepares to play in a new stadium.

The contract extension was announced Thursday, one day before Inter Miami's opening playoff match against Nashville. Messi's team , ranked third in the Eastern Conference, will host the first match of the three-game series on Friday evening local time.

Details of the new contract were not immediately disclosed, although Inter Miami had been pushing for a deal that would extend through 2027 or 2028.

Messi's participation for two or three additional seasons will undoubtedly boost ticket sales for the stadium Inter Miami is building near Miami International Airport. The team has been selling ticket packages and reserving seats at the new stadium for more than a year, assuming the 2022 World Cup winner remains with the club.

For his part, Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano spoke on Thursday about Messi's contract renewal, saying, "It's fun to enjoy him and watch him enjoy what he's doing. He has a very competitive spirit, and he tries to translate that to the team."

He added: "The best way to help him is to try to do the right things. He has to be comfortable on the pitch. He feels comfortable when things are going right."
