Mourinho avoids rumors of his return to Real Madrid... and sets his sights on his goal
Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho, currently managing Benfica, declined to give a definitive answer regarding the possibility of taking over at Real Madrid next season, replacing Alvaro Arbeloa. He stated that his sole focus is on leading his team to the Champions League. The Athletic had reported that Mourinho is considered Florentino Perez's favorite to coach Real Madrid next season, but there are voices within the club opposed to his return, given his previous stint managing the capital club from 2010 to 2013.
When asked about the speculation linking him to Real Madrid and Juventus, Mourinho replied: "No, my next goal is to lead Benfica to the Champions League." He added: "We've had an exceptional run; we're the only team in Europe that hasn't lost a single match. If we win our next three games, we'll qualify for the most important competition in Europe. That's all I'm focused on."
Mourinho surprised many by saying: "For me, Rome was the best place of my career. I've never felt such a fantastic atmosphere around any football team. The Stadio Olimpico is always full, and the way people feel for the players... When we won the Conference League, the celebration was incredible. Even in my Champions League victories, I never saw scenes like that."
