On Saturday, the Twitter application began activating a monthly subscription for $ 8 to get the blue tick for verified accounts, as part of the policy of the new owner of the platform, Elon Musk. In an update to the iOS system for Apple devices, Twitter announced that users who "sign up now" can get a blue check mark next to their name "just like celebrities, companies and politicians" for $8 per month.
This change marks the end of Twitter's usual verification system, which began in 2009, to prevent the identities of celebrities and politicians from being impersonated. Prior to this development, Twitter had about 423,000 verified accounts, many of which were for journalists from around the world that the company verified, regardless of the number of their followers.
Experts have raised concerns about changing the app's verification system, which, while imperfect, has helped Twitter's 238 million daily users determine whether the accounts they get information from are genuine. It comes a day after the company began layoffs to cut costs, with half of the company's 7,500 employees already having their contracts terminated, Yoel Roth, the company's head of safety and integrity, said via the app.
