The Somali government calls for a review of its dealings with international partners.
Mogadishu – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Somali government issued a statement signed by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ali Balad, requesting a review of its approach to engagement with international partners.
The statement indicated that the international community's approach to Somalia during the transitional period cannot continue, as it undermines the legitimacy of federal state institutions. It called for moving beyond this approach and initiating a new approach consistent with the current situation in Somalia.
The statement clarified that Somalia is a sovereign state with constitutional institutions, a democratic system, and a national vision for addressing its issues, and is not in a transitional phase. It added that Somalia remains ready to cooperate with the international community, but in a manner that respects its sovereignty.
The statement coincides with a time when international partners were making efforts to find a way out of the disputes between the federal government, some regional states, and opposition politicians. In previous periods, these partners played a role in resolving such disputes, but the statement issued by the Somali Foreign Ministry put an end to those roles.
