 Today, Tuesday evening, 50 militants from the Al-Shabaab movement affiliated with Al-Qaeda were killed in a new operation of the Somali army in the Lower Juba region, southern Somalia.

State TV quoted a military source in the American-trained Special Forces to Combat Al-Shabaab (Danab) as saying, “The Somali army carried out raids and sweeps of villages located in the Lower Juba region, and killed 50 members of (Somali youth) in the village of Wilmro, 45 km northeast of Afamdo, near the Somali-Kenyan border.

According to the military source, high-ranking security leaders were among those killed in the Al-Shabaab movement, including the director of the movement's financial apparatus in the village of Wilmro, and a number of other members of the movement were arrested.

This operation comes only two days after the Somali government announced a military operation carried out by the Somali army, in cooperation with its international partners, against Al-Shabab in the Wilmero region, 40 kilometers from the Afmadow district of Lower Juba Governorate (southern Somalia).

And the official “SUNA” agency reported that the joint forces carried out an air and ground operation, on Sunday morning, killing 40 Al-Shabab militants linked to Al-Qaeda, in addition to destroying weapons and military vehicles belonging to the movement.

The Somali army, in cooperation with international partners, is conducting a military campaign against Al-Shabaab in the Lower Juba region, which the movement has fully controlled since 2020. The campaign aims to expel the movement from the southern regions, as part of a government campaign launched against the movement since August 2022.
