The UK supports Somali security forces with £5 million

The UK

The UK Government has announced an additional £5 million in funding to the UNSOM Trust Fund to support Somali security forces. This came in a meeting between the National Security Advisor to the Somali President, Hussein Sheikh Ali, and the British Deputy National Security Advisor for International Affairs, Sarah McIntosh, during her visit to Somalia last week.

The funding builds on the significant contributions made by the UK to date through the UNSOM Trust Fund, which is providing logistical support to the SSF, which will include food, shelter and life-saving medical support.

UK funding will provide ongoing support to operations against Al-Shabaab, and will also help Somali security forces build their capacity as they assume greater responsibility for security.

Deputy National Security Adviser, Sarah McIntosh, said: “The security partnership between the United Kingdom and Somalia is important for achieving stability and security in Somalia and the region.” She indicated that the United Kingdom would support Somali-led efforts to combat terrorism and restore stability in captured areas of the country.
