The President of Puntland state announces the holding of elections in which the parties will compete

The President of Puntland

The President of Puntland State in northeastern Somalia, Said Abdullahi Deni, defied his opponents and announced the holding of parliamentary and presidential elections in which the parties would compete in the state.

Deni indicated that his government will hold popular elections in the remaining three months of its constitutional term, rejecting the opposition’s demands regarding a return to holding elections in the old tribal method.

The President of Bontlan made it clear on Friday that he had no desire to extend beyond the period during which the Constitution allowed him to remain in power, and stated that his government had directed the holding of one-person-one-vote elections.

Deni strongly criticized the opposition and said that it wants to stop democracy at gunpoint, noting that it has the opportunity to compete through political parties.

Two days ago, the opposition in the state of Puntland, with its various sects, held a meeting in Growe, the capital of Puntland, and indicated that the circumstances do not allow holding elections in which parties participate and demanded a return to the power-sharing system on a tribal basis, which is the system that has been in effect in Puntland since its founding in 1998.
