Mogadishu police deny that they have banned wearing the niqab and turban

The police command in the capital, Mogadishu, denied that the Somali government banned people from wearing face masks, turbans and hats to enhance the security of the capital. The police chief in Mogadishu urged residents of the city to report any violations related to the order that was not issued by the security services.

In a statement published on his Facebook page on Monday, the police chief of Banadir Province, Mahdi Omar Momen, accused those he described as the enemy of spreading propaganda against the security services.

Momen said: “There is no security decision to ban religious symbols of the Somali community. It is enemy propaganda, and you must not be fooled. Security forces are in place to protect religion.” This comes after security forces in the past few days began asking passengers of public transport vehicles and tuk-tuks to remove face masks, turbans and hats, which angered residents of the capital.
