The United States government said on Friday that it welcomes the meeting of regional IGAD leaders in Uganda on the 18th of this month, to discuss the crisis between Somalia and Ethiopia.

A brief statement from the US State Department’s Office of African Affairs, published on the X website, formerly known as Twitter, said: “We welcome the IGAD summit scheduled for January 18 to discuss the tensions between Somalia and Ethiopia and the situation in Sudan.”

The statement added: “The United States supports the independence and territorial integrity of Somalia, and the call of the Chairman of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki, to stop the conflict in Sudan and begin dialogue, a ceasefire, and a solution to the war in Sudan.”

The President of the Republic of Djibouti, Ismail Omar Guelleh, who is the current President of the regional IGAD organization, had decided to hold this extraordinary summit of IGAD Heads of State and Government, hosted by Uganda, to search for solutions to the crisis between Somalia and Ethiopia, as well as the ongoing conflict in Sudan.
