The European Union approves $116.9 million to strengthen security in Somalia

The European Union said that it agreed to allocate US$116.9 million to stabilization efforts in Somalia, and the Union indicated that these funds are allocated to support the Somali National Army and the African Union Transitional Mission in Somalia.

The union said it would add $74.4 million to the resources already mobilized for the African mission in previous years and $42.5 million for the Somali army. He added in a statement issued on Tuesday that the aim of providing this support is to contribute to the Somali National Army taking over security responsibility from the African Mission.

It should be noted that in 2023, the African Union Mission in Somalia began a gradual withdrawal from Somalia in compliance with the UN Security Council resolution, and completed the first and second phases in which 5,000 soldiers were withdrawn, and the remaining soldiers are expected to completely withdraw from the country at the end of this year.
