Minister of Internal Security and UNDP Representative Chair Key Meeting to Advance Police Reform in Somalia
Mogadishu – The Minister of Internal Security in the Federal Government of Somalia, Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail Fartag, and the UNDP Resident Representative for Somalia, Lionel Lawrence, chaired the Steering Committee meeting of the second phase of the Joint Policing Programme in Mogadishu on Tuesday.
This high-level meeting brought together key stakeholders, including ministers from the Federal Member States, the Deputy Commissioner of the Somali Federal Police, representatives from the European Union, the United Kingdom, the African Union Support Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), police reform experts, and other key international partners.
The Joint Policing Programme, co-funded by the European Union Delegation to Somalia and the British Embassy in Mogadishu, is a pioneering initiative aimed at building a professional, community-oriented police force that reflects values of inclusiveness and gender equality. The programme also focuses on improving service delivery and strengthening the rule of law across Somalia.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the Steering Committee formally approved the revised 2025 Annual Work Plan and Budget, marking a significant step in national efforts to strengthen Somalia's security institutions through coordinated federal and international support.
The Public-Private Partnership (PPP) program remains a cornerstone of Somalia's security sector reform, aligned with the country's broader goals of long-term stability, federal cooperation, and peacebuilding.
