Esperance loses to Flamengo in Club World Cup

Tunisian club Esperance began their Club World Cup campaign with a 2-0 loss to Brazilian club Flamengo on Monday in the first round of Group D of the tournament held in the United States.

Esperance performed poorly in the first half, failing to pose the slightest threat to the Brazilian team's goal. This contrasted with the second half, when they had several scoring opportunities, particularly from veteran Algerian star Youssef Belaili, but to no avail.

Uruguayan Giorgian de Arrascaeta opened the scoring for Flamengo in the 17th minute, while Luiz Araujo added the second goal in the 70th minute.

Esperance, participating in the Club World Cup for the fourth time in its history, remains without a point, while Flamengo, the leaders of the Brazilian league, earned their first three points in the group.

Flamengo shares the group lead with English club Chelsea, who won by the same score against Los Angeles FC.

Flamengo, third in the 2022 Club World Cup in Morocco, will meet Chelsea in the second round, which will feature a crucial clash between Esperance and Los Angeles FC.

The group winners and runners-up will advance to the knockout stages, according to the competition regulations.
