The Somali government requests the suspension of the work of the United Nations Aid Office in the country
The Somali federal government has officially asked the United Nations to stop the work of the United Nations Assistance Office in Somalia (UNSOM). The Ministry said that it is time to move to the second phase, and expressed its confidence that the Somali government will continue its efforts to maintain peace and prosperity. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation indicated that Somalia has made progress in building the state, especially in the areas of security and politics, and explained that it prefers to be independent in developing the country's future.
It should be noted that the mandate of the United Nations Mission in Somalia will end at the end of October 2024, and this request coincided with a time when Catriona Ling, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in Somalia, will leave the country this month after the end of her term.
