The British ambassador to Somalia responds to his accusation of violating the country's sovereignty

The British Ambassador to Somalia, Mike Nithavrianakis, responded to his accusation by the Somali Foreign Minister, Ahmed Moalim Faqi, of making a statement that violated the country’s sovereignty and unity.

The minister's accusation came after the British ambassador posted on his website X (formerly Twitter). The UK is “proud to support the fantastic work of the HALO Trust in demining and explosive ordnance disposal in Somalia, Somaliland and elsewhere around the world.”

Minister Faki expressed his strong condemnation of this, saying: “The fragmentation of a unified entity and its reclassification under two different names is completely unacceptable and constitutes a blatant attack on Somalia’s sovereignty and unity.”

In his response to the accusation directed against him, the United Kingdom’s ambassador to Somalia said, “The United Kingdom’s position on Somalia’s regional independence remains firm, as well as its support for Somalia as a united country,” noting that his statement was related to the work of the HALO Trust organization supported by the United Kingdom.

The aforementioned organization, which is a UK-based charity specializing in mine clearance and explosive ordnance disposal, operates in both Somalia and Somaliland. The organization has been operating in the region since 1999.
