Dahabshiil Company removes the name “Somaliland” from its platforms
Dahabshiil, a leading financial services provider, announced the removal of the name “Somaliland” from its platforms, in compliance with the orders of the Somali government demanding the use of the name “Somalia” instead of “Somaliland.” The move sparked angry reactions in Somaliland, where some accused the company, which operates in more than 120 countries, of abandoning its roots. This decision comes in the wake of similar pressures faced by international companies. The Somali Civil Aviation Authority recently issued directives to international airlines, such as Flydubai and Ethiopian Airlines, asking them to include Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland, as part of Somalia.
Although Ethiopian Airlines initially resisted using airport-only codes, it eventually complied to avoid suspension of its operations in Somalia. So far, there has been no official comment from the Somaliland government, which declared its independence from the rest of Somalia in 1991, on the measure.
