The President reopens the National Advisory Council meeting in Mogadishu
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud reopened the National Consultative Council meeting at the presidential palace in Mogadishu on Sunday to address issues of security, state-building and elections. The high-level meeting resumed amid the absence of the states of Puntland and Jubbaland, as the leaders of the two states boycotted the meeting of the National Advisory Council.Participating in the current meeting are the Prime Minister, Hamza Abdi Barre, his deputy, Salih Jama, and the heads of the states of Galmudug, Ahmed Abdi Kariya “Goor Gore” and Hirshabelle, Ali Abdullah Hussein “Godlawi”, South West Abdulaziz Hassan Mohamed “Liftagrin”, and the mayor of Mogadishu, Yusuf Hussein Jumaale. .
The absence of the presidents of Puntland and Jubaland constitutes an obstacle to the efforts made by the federal government to hold direct elections in the country, as such elections require a national consensus on their arrangements.
There were efforts made to bring the President of Jubaland, Ahmed Madobe, back to the advisory council meeting, but they ended in failure, as Madobe insists on the need for the Puntland Khatima Transitional Administration to participate in decisions related to the elections, and his administration is preparing to hold the state elections indirectly.
