US Pledges $28 Million for New Projects to Boost Resilience, Food Security in Somalia
The US government has announced a $28 million contribution to fund the first year of two five-year projects to enhance resilience and food security in Somalia, US Ambassador Richard Riley revealed at a press conference in Mogadishu.“This year, the United States will complement its already significant investment in emergency assistance in Somalia with another $28 million contribution to support the first year of two new five-year projects focused on resilience and food security,” the ambassador said. “Over the next five years, these programs will help more than 80,000 Somali households—or nearly 500,000 people—build sustainable livelihoods, grow financial capital, and increase their savings and assets.”
The funding will support two major projects implemented through partners such as World Vision and Save the Children. The first will provide training and tools for sustainable livelihoods in agriculture, livestock management and small business development. The second will promote economic empowerment by improving access to microfinance and reducing financial instability for vulnerable communities.
