Somalia and Ukraine establish official diplomatic relations
The Somali and Ukrainian governments announced the establishment of official diplomatic relations between the two countries on Friday during the Antalya Diplomatic Forum in Türkiye.
The agreement was signed between the Somali Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ali Mohamed Omar, and the Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister, Andriy Sibiha, on the sidelines of the forum that brought together leaders and diplomats from around the world.
Sibiha said in a post on the “X” platform (formerly Twitter) that his country appreciates Somalia’s support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, noting that Somalia has expressed its position in support of Ukraine in international forums.
It is noteworthy that Ukraine provided humanitarian aid to Somalia through the “Grains from Ukraine” initiative, where in 2022 it sent about 50,000 tons of wheat to both Somalia and Ethiopia, as part of efforts to mitigate the effects of drought and food insecurity.
