Puntland is moving towards an open voting system as a step to combat corruption
Puntland plans to move from secret elections to an open voting system as a move aimed at reducing corruption and allegations of bribery.
According to the Chairman of the Puntland Election Commission, Ahmed Mahmoud Omar, this new approach is expected to prevent the exchange of bribes for votes, enhancing transparency and confidence in the electoral process.
Several Puntland ministers and officials expressed their full support for this initiative, stressing that it is shameful to select elected representatives by secret means, and urging the Electoral Commission to incorporate this new provision into official electoral procedures.
These reforms are part of a broader effort to correct past electoral errors that led to conflicts and hampered cooperation within local councils, and Puntland's transition to an open voting system is a critical step towards promoting a more transparent and effective democratic process.
