Somalia and Egypt are exploring ways to strengthen relations before the Arab summit

The Somali Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdel Salam Omar, held a bilateral meeting with the Egyptian Foreign Minister, Badr Abdel Ati, on the sidelines of the preparatory meetings for the thirty-fourth regular session of the Arab Summit in Iraq.

The high-level meeting emphasized the growing momentum in Somali-Egyptian relations, and the two ministers discussed “ways to deepen cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including trade, security, education, and regional diplomacy,” according to a brief statement.

The Somali minister affirmed his country's appreciation for the continued Egyptian support, and stressed the need to coordinate efforts on issues affecting the Horn of Africa and the Arab region as a whole.

His Egyptian counterpart, Minister Abdel-Ati, expressed similar sentiments, noting that Somalia remains a major partner of Egypt in East Africa, and the two sides discussed the importance of preserving Arab unity and supporting comprehensive development throughout the region, during the meeting, which represents a continued commitment from both countries to strengthen bilateral cooperation in light of common regional challenges and opportunities.
