Somali President Meets EU Delegation in Mogadishu

Mogadishu – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met with a high-level delegation from the European External Action Service (EEAS) at the Presidential Palace to discuss strengthening cooperation between Somalia and the European Union.

The European delegation was led by Jonas Jonsson, Director of the Africa Department, and was accompanied by the EU Ambassador to Somalia, Karin Johansson. The meeting focused on deepening the multifaceted partnership between Somalia and the EU, encompassing governance, security, development, humanitarian assistance, and institution building.

President Mohamud expressed his gratitude for the EU’s unwavering commitment to Somalia, particularly its role in supporting state-building, peacekeeping efforts, economic development, and democratic governance.

A statement from the Somali presidency read: “The President commended the EU for its continued support and emphasized the importance of strengthening strategic cooperation to ensure stability and inclusive progress across the country.”

The discussions also addressed future areas of cooperation, including economic recovery, climate change resilience, youth empowerment, and regional security dynamics.

This meeting comes as Somalia seeks fundamental reforms aimed at strengthening federal governance and preparing for the transfer of security responsibilities from international forces to Somali-led institutions.
