The Somali government requires the use of a national identity card to access transportation services

Mogadishu – The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation of the Federal Government of Somalia announced that all services provided by the ministry will now be linked to the use of the national identity card issued by the National Identity and Registration Authority.

According to a press release issued by the ministry, "Anyone who wishes to benefit from the services provided by the ministry, such as driving licenses, vehicle registration, or other transportation-related services, must carry a national identity card."

The new regulations will also affect public transportation companies and other stakeholders in the sector. These entities will be required to ensure that their operations comply with the identity requirements set by the ministry.

The ministry explained that this initiative falls within the framework of implementing the National Reform Plan approved in March 2025, which aims to ensure national security and identify citizens.
