Storm in Real Madrid: Thousands of fans sign petition for Mbappe's immediate dismissal
More than 250,000 Real Madrid fans have signed an online petition calling for the expulsion of French star Kylian Mbappé from the team, just days before arch-rivals Barcelona could be crowned La Liga champions in the highly anticipated Clásico on Sunday. Barcelona currently hold an 11-point lead over Real Madrid and could have secured the title last weekend had Real Madrid not defeated Espanyol 2-0.Real Madrid are on the verge of finishing the season without a trophy for the second consecutive year, a situation that has drawn criticism towards the French national team captain, despite his recent absence from the squad due to a muscle injury in his left leg.
Instead of supporting his team against Espanyol, the 2018 World Cup winner traveled to Sardinia, Italy, with his girlfriend, Spanish actress Ester Expósito, where they were photographed enjoying the sun on a yacht.
According to the Spanish newspaper AS, fans have been attacking Mbappé on social media and demanding his expulsion from the team, while his teammates believe his decision to go on holiday during this stage of the season has distanced him from the dressing room.
An online petition calling for Mbappé's expulsion has been launched, stating: "Madridistas, make your voices heard. If you believe change is necessary, don't remain silent – sign this petition and stand up for what you believe is best for the future of the club." The petition had garnered 253,000 signatures by Tuesday afternoon.
Real Madrid coach Álvaro Arbeloa defended Mbappé in the post-match press conference following the Espanyol game, stating: "All recovery plans for our injured players are overseen by the club's doctors. They are the ones who decide when the players return to the training ground (Valdebebas)."
However, according to the French newspaper L'Équipe, some figures within Real Madrid were frustrated with Mbappé's behavior during a difficult period for the team. The French striker is perceived as receiving preferential treatment in the Spanish capital since his move from Paris Saint-Germain in 2014. He is also seen as favoring the French players on the team and as frequently arriving late for team meals.
